Viking Malt brings American craft malts to the European markets

Starting in spring 2016, this new collaboration contract gives Viking Malt a license to produce CM’s craft malts for the European markets.

Press release – Lahti, Helsinki /Alamosa, Colorado, USA (September 24, 2015) Viking Malt, the leading malting company in Northern Europe, and Colorado Malting Company (CM) from the United States will start a cooperation to bring original American craft malts to European breweries. Starting in spring 2016, this new collaboration contract gives Viking Malt a license to produce CM’s craft malts for the European markets.

The craft beer boom that has taken Europe by storm has always been greatly influenced by the US beer culture. However, until now, the availability of American malts has been limited in Europe. With this collaboration, Viking Malt is specifically targeting the rapidly growing European craft brewery sector.
– American style beers are getting more and more popular. This collaboration gives us a chance to offer also American craft malts all throughout Europe. We have seen growing interest for these kinds of products for a while now, so we are very pleased with this collaboration and see it as a great opportunity, says Timo Huttunen, Business Unit Manager of Viking Malt.

The benefits of this collaboration go both ways. Colorado Malting Company, who has until now operated only inside the US, will gain access to the European markets. From now on, CM can also offer Viking Malt’s wide selection of quality malts to its American customers.

¬– We produce various types of malts specifically for craft beer breweries all around the US, and the wide range of Viking Malt’s products will supplement our selections significantly, says Jason Cody, the president of Colorado Malting Company.

Malt contribution to beer taste and flavor

Viking Malt is the leading Nordic malting company which offers a broad range of malt varieties to both small and large breweries. History of Viking Malt dates back to 1883 when distillery named Lahden Polttimo was found in Finland. Today we have three malthouses around the Baltic rim, one in Sweden, Finland and Lithuania each. We produce annually more than 350 000 tons of malts and other cereal products for brewers and distillers all over the world. Our selection of malts differs from pale basic barley malts to specials like dark roasted malts.

The world of malts is rich, not only because of the wide variety of production methods used in manufacturing different types of malts, but also due to the possibility of using a variety of cereals for malting and brewing. Sometimes, these malts are called special malts, but due to the increased usage of these products in the production of so called standard lager beers, we would rather refer to them as different malts. This small lecture describes the wide variety of malts from which today’s brewers can choose when brewing high quality beers, not only for beer enthusiasts but also for brewing volume products. Main focus is put on the flavour effects of different malts and examples of main malt types are also offered for small tasting.
