Five decades of Balvenie – Cask Samples taken from the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s and 00’s.
The Master classes for The Balvenie will be held by both David Stewart and Sam Simmons:
David Stewart - The Balvenie Malt Master
As the longest-serving malt master in the Scotch whisky industry, David Stewart started work at The Balvenie distillery in 1962 at the age of just 17. During a 12 year apprenticeship, he mastered the skills of nosing and whisky creation and was appointed The Balvenie Malt Master in 1974. Over his 50 year career, David has developed an award-winning range of single malt whiskies that have earned him some of the industry’s top accolades and helped the independent William Grant & Sons become Distiller of the Year an unprecedented five times by the International Spirits Challenge (ISC), four times by the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) and for the first time by the World Whiskies Awards in 2011. This year (2012) marks his 50th anniversary at The Balvenie distillery.
Sam Simmons - The Balvenie Global Ambassador
Sam Simmons is a globally-recognised Scotch Whisky expert and educator. After six years in the UK, in Edinburgh and in London, hosting tasting events and whisky tours, researching and teaching Scotch whisky history, writing the award-winning Dr. Whisky website, and sitting on the most prestigious judging panels in the industry, Sam was invited in 2008 to represent Scotland’s most handcrafted single malt whisky in the USA as the company's first Ambassador in that country. After two years successful years in America, Sam moved back to the UK when the distillery invited him to become The Balvenie Global Ambassador.
